SUBARU X-MODE vs. LOCKER vs. LSD vs. OPEN
I'd love to hear what you think in the comments. Here are my thoughts:
If you don't have X-Mode, then you need a rear Torq locker.
If you do have X-Mode, then I don't think that you need a rear locker.
However, I plan to add a rear locker AFTER I gain the
ability to manually control the center clutch.
Newer Subarus should be able to do a version of
the classic "SG Forester center diff lock mod"
More about this in my next video!

Flex Testing a Forester Wilderness with and without Sway Bars
Просмотров 2,7 тыс.6 месяцев назад
Swaybars are for race cars. They stiffen the suspension and reduce body roll in high speed corners by physically linking the left and right suspension to move up and down together. There's one swaybar for the front and one for the rear. For off roading, they are a massive hinderance! When the swaybar end-links are removed, each wheel can move up and down COMPLETELY independently, better conform...

Could you not get even longer flight times if you build a mechanism to eject empty cells?
Hey Matt, did you you ever end up running the 1.5"/1" ADF lift? My FIL is considering that option over the LP Aventure 2" for his outback wilderness.
Your sway bar delete video got me here and I am so glad I saw this. Thanks for making this fun edit and inspiring us SK owners! Just curious, have you ever done Yankee Boy Basin all the way to the top in your SK?
Will this work on an 2024 outback?
Will this work on an 2024 outback?
Very nicely explained. I'm not sure why you started with a Subaru though. It's engine hangs out entirely ahead of the front axle line making for a limited approach angle. Also, a CVT doesn't seem ideal for off-roading.
Is the Volantex Phoenix 2400mm a good lit/platform to build a long range fpv plane? I just wanna cruise around mostly and do the recordings with a gopro.
What is the total weight of this plane?
Is this plastic part in the electrically adjusted seats as well?
Long shot, as video is 3 years old. Wondering what's the CG is good for this plane. Specs says 29cm from the nose ,read somewhere else says 28cm.
Where can I buy those ramps? What brand, and what item designation, name, or part-number? Are similar but MUCH TALLER ramps also offered?
How does the load weight rating relate to your wheel (rim) choice? I assume the OE "snowflake pattern" (Enkie made) rim rating/strength is well above what Subaru thinks is good and safe for average driving conditions (presumably the manufacturer specification for whatever the OE rim load rating is, corresponds to the vehicle weight / 4, plus some margin for max. recommended passenger/cargo load, safety with common road hazards such as potholes, etc.). I've not been able to find what the later generations Forester OE wheel specifications in this regard are, or Subaru's metrics for that... So it's hard to have a baseline for this consideration, aside from just anecdotal evidence of what kind and models of rims are commonly used for offroad Subaru builds, professional and otherwise. Often a lighter rim means less strength, at least until considering true forged alloys. Presumably a good tire with a taller profile on a smaller rim mitigates somewhat any valid concern about rim strength for offroading. Still, it'd be good for the average Subaru owner looking for real offroad capability upgrades to know this kind of thing. Reducing unsprung weight is great for performance and wear on the drivetrain and suspension components, but even a high quality light street performance rim may come at a real cost in terms of reliability for anything more than light offroad use.
Cool. Thx
Nice approach, looks amazing. What a phenomenal SUV!
Many thanks! 😄
Would love Subaru to bring out a ''Jimny'' version as well also a new Brat!
I love seeing the progression of Subarus off road. When I first started doing it, it was with ea81s and 13 inch tires. My first time with a group of Subarus at Evans Creek was in 1997, an 85 GL wagon on 185/70/13s. We had no lockers, no LSDs. Lifts came from Australia at first. We figured out how to swap in the LSDs from the RXs and things got easier. Ahh those were the days. Lots of pics and vids. :). ruclips.net/video/ieE9Hb-B_qo/видео.html
This channel is extremely good in showing how very capable a Subaru can be with a few modifications! Keep up the great work! Love it!😎🙌🙌
Many thanks! 😄
Guys, I have a question and it would be a massive favour if you could shed some light on this for me. I'm about to upgrade my 2012 Suzuki Grand Vitara wheels and tyres for offroad but standard wheels range from 16in - 18in. Some of you guys have 15in wheels which is what I'd love to have. I looked up the 2014 2.5L Outback specs and noticed that standard wheels are either 17in or 18in. How do you guys make 15in wheels fit so that you can get that sweet sweet sidewall thiccness?! Please share your secrets lol
It mostly just depends on brake caliper clearance. I’m the blue trek and stick rims were 17s, but because my brake calipers were small enough I was able to downsize to 15s. I’ve heard from some newer Outback owners that you can run wheel spacers to help drop to smaller rims too (some have 16s as opposed to 17s)
Anyone install this on a 2024 Forester and does it work?
Yup! I have it installed on my 2024 Forester.
@@MatthewHeiskell I ordered one after looking at the connection in the car. Hopefully I get the right cable, any hints? I bought the Auto Stop Eliminator one and it works but it was $89 so I’m hoping to send it back if this works.
Yeah, it will work and you can send the expensive one back. 👍

great job pilot
Awwwssooooommme! All of You Crazies!
Legendary. I have been cussing out Subaru for neither providing a full size spare, nor even a space big enough for one on the Crosstrek since the day I got it. Googled to see if anyone’s enlarged the spare wheel well and bam you’ve done exactly that. I don’t have any welding experience but this makes me want to learn!
Crazy I just found this.. I'm gonna have to get back into this someday.
thinking on doing this, i live in a hot weather country with lots of hills.
“Hey your mirrors will pop right in, it’s all good. You’ll get four more inches.” 😂😂😂😂😂
The way they cheered makes me laugh every time! 😂
How's the setup holding up so far? I'm going to try with 3 bolts 😅
He’s reported zero issues, go for it!
Install went well! Thanks for creating this tutorial and trail blazing these things for the Forester community! Hope to see an Imogene pt2 with the wilderness.
Awesome! 😄 Such a slick setup, right? We had plans to hit Colorado this weekend, but Imogene pass is still closed because of the snow. Wife and I are going to hit it 4th of July weekend. I’ll have her drive it so I can fly the drone. So be pretty epic and I can’t wait to test the FW’s better gearing. Cheers man!
How difficult is that Hayden Trans Cooler to install at home?
It’s pretty straight forward. You can do it. Message me on IG if you have any questions. sk_foz

Why does no-one do the sti R180 rear diff with an arb locker, then best of both worlds, locker in rough, open on road, plus stronger rear gears.
What tires are we on? Thinking of upgrading my OEM stock tires on my 2020 outback for something more rugged and capable on BC backcountry roads. thanks!
245/65R17 is the magic number for tire size! There are online tire size calculator and comparison tools that will help you.
@@MatthewHeiskell why do you say 17" and not 16 or 15? im looking for some new rims and i wasnt even considering 17 on my 2012 forester.
Awesome content! Running a stock 23 FW with just a Thule cargo box. Plan to upgrade tires to at least a 225/65/17, but possibly 235s with stock suspension.
Nice, but you can go all the way to 245/65R17 without rubbing if you use the stock wheels.
The Forester Wilderness definitely seemed to have the easiest time. Really impressive all around what Subaru has been able do with limited hardware. Excellent video!
It’s a beast! It had a lot in reserve. The improved gearing makes a huge difference on this kinda stuff.
I don't do a lot of articulation stuff in my outback but i'd bet it would be fun in the snow. I did put a throttle controller in though and it makes a big difference on and off road.
Cool! Get it out there and have fun! 😄
Thank you Man..auto start is the only sh#t I hate of my subaru..
Amen! Haha, but you can also disable the seatbelt chime!

Subaru AWD is so good!
Very important info. Thanks a lot.
Glad that you enjoyed it! 😄
I have watched your video several times and I have to say, You did such a great job with this mission. I think I am going to go out and purchase the same plane just for soaring out in the desert. I subscribed for sure.
Thanks so much! It’s a fantastic plane!
Would you still use these or have you changed?
I just got a new 2024 Forester wilderness and I bought the same for it too. I highly recommend them!
I freaking love my Subaru !!! Go SUBARU !!!!!!
Me too! Subaru rocks! 😄
Xmode is pretty cool. Do you run an aftermaket exhaust?
Yeah, X-Mode is amazing. Joe runs the nameless dual chamber exhaust. I prefer the quieter stock exhaust.
все не понятно . все они заехали ,кроме SG . он только ходом может
Thank you! 😄
So you bought a 2024 wilderness?
Yes, my wife drives the 2019 Forester now. I got the 2024 Forester Wilderness for the 26% better gearing. That was the only thing that I didn’t like about the 2019. Otherwise I think it’s a perfect car.
@@MatthewHeiskell how would you rate the reliability ? Im considering a forester like yours.
I HIGHLY recommend the Subaru Forester. Here’s KBB’s list of the top ten most reliable vehicles. The Subaru Forester is #6 and if you look at the points, it’s very close to the best. www.kbb.com/car-news/consumer-reports-lists-ten-most-reliable-cars/
@@MatthewHeiskell Thanks, that’s awesome I’m going to check it out now. Any thoughts or knowledge of the new forester wilderness 2025?
From what I’ve heard, the 25FW will be the same as the 24FW, like my new one. The 25F non-wildy will be the new model, complete redesign
But what exactly is "X-Mode"? It's just a marketing term for different computer controlled drive modes like most 4WD or AWD systems offer that provides minimal adjustments to throttle, transmission and slip braking.
It definitely not just a marketing term. It’s a way to use the car’s ABS system to control the open diffs. Toyota has the same thing, they call it A-Trac for active traction control. Jeep calls it BLD. It makes a HUGE difference if you don’t have mechanical diff lockers.
@@MatthewHeiskell Right, like I said, it's just Subaru's term for it's drive modes which rely on slip braking. I've always wondered why Subaru hasn't been a little more generous with the LSD option.
Subaru used to do rear LSDs pretty frequently, but X-mode out performs that because it works on the front too. And it’s basically free. Just software, no extra hardware.
@@MatthewHeiskell Subaru rarely did LSDs, only like STI and a few WRXs and maybe a Turbo Forester model. And yes, slip braking is the cheap approach, that, once again, most makers use. LSD is possible front and rear and promotes forward progress better than braking. Honda uses a front LSD on the Civic Si model to quell torque steer and promote cornering. I've seen YT videos showing the RAV4 TRD Pro model with a dual-clutch rear LSD react quicker to lack of traction than the Forester Wilderness.
The delay for X-Mode to work it fine with me. You need to learn how to use it, learn to give it time to think and problem solve. Learn to ignore the weird ABS noises. Most people let off the gas before it can really work. It’s simple and very effective once you learn some tricks and get some first hand experience behind the wheel.
How did you get an email from Subaru? Was there a tracker gps in you vehicle that allowed them to know?
All Subarus since 2019 or so have a Starlink system. It’s like the older GM OnStar system. It can automatically call for an ambulance if you’re in a bad crash. It can track and immobilize the vehicle if it’s stolen. It will also send you an informative email if the check engine light turns on. It has a GPS and it uses nearby cell towers.
I keep watching these great off road videos and then realize that there are absolutely no good off road spots anywhere near San Antonio so no use to get an off roader. I have a all wheel drive Ford Lightning but not enough ground clearance to go off road for real.
There’s a trail to your NW called Texas Hill Country Tour. It’s 140 miles of easy trails. Difficulty is only a 2 of 10. Look it up! Your truck would have zero issues.
Been looking for the crawl ratio on the CTW for a while now, super interesting. Car is definitely a little stump puller. Thanks for putting this together.
Yeah, with its larger 2.5L engine, better gearing, small size and weight, it’s going to be crazy capable off road. Subaru did a great thing with their Wilderness trim.
@MatthewHeiskell yep. Absolutely love mine so far. Kinda figure before I take it on any serious offroading I need to get some better skid plates and a full size spare, though.
Yes! Skidplates are an absolute must! Are you near New Mexico? I could make an awesome aluminum bumper for it that would significantly improve the approach angle. It would include an engine skid, so something to consider before buying skids.
Love this lol. Unfortunately I am in the pnw. I was eyeing the body armor hiline bumper but have a hard time justifying the cost and cutting pieces off the bumper of my brand new car lmao. Curious as to why you're not a fan of the vents on the primitive skids.
Yeah, haha a little painful to cut up a new car. My friend has the Body Armor 4x4 winch bumper. I helped him install it. It’s good, but it doesn’t improve the approach angle. I not a fan of the vents in the primitive skids for a few reasons: 1 they don’t work, the gap just isn’t large enough to flow air. 2 they weaken the skid. 3 they make the skid slide less easily. Especially backward when you’re trying to get out of a bad situation.
